Henry Luce, the creator of Time Magazine, also founded Sports Illustrated, a monthly sports magazine, in 1954. It is the top sports publication in the country. Luce founded Sports Illustrated in an effort to expand the range of magazines that Time Inc. controlled. Henry Luce had little interest in sports. However, he thought that something was missing from the American media scene in the early 1950s: a sports-focused Time-style magazine. The media magnate succeeded in his efforts over the objections of numerous advisors who viewed sports as an insignificant subject and attempted to discourage him from it. The weekly magazine's debut edition was published on August 16, 1954. The journal suffered in its early years because the early issues lacked concentration and covered both elite sports like rugby and popular spectator sports. Sports Illustrated began to concentrate on major athletic events after Andre Laguerre became management of the publication in 1960. This allowed readers to learn more about what they had seen on television or read about in newspapers. Laguerre focused the publication on the big sports, like football and baseball, and gave it structure. As a result, Laguerre was able to make billions of dollars in profit and acquire millions of new readers. Sports Illustrated produced a profit in a matter of years, and by the 1970s, it was widely regarded as the leading source of American sports news. Its strong brand and reputation for excellence in journalism carried over into the era of digital media and ESPN. Over the years, Sports Illustrated has received several National Magazine Awards. Sports Illustrated joined Time Warner in 1990 after Warner Communications and Time Inc. merged to form the company.
